Share your course details and preferred times. We will check course fit and tutor availability before confirming a trial.

Which BTEC Applied Science qualification are you studying?

Applied Science combines scientific knowledge with ways of investigating and explaining evidence. A student may understand an idea in class but struggle to apply it to an unfamiliar graph, choose a calculation or justify a conclusion. Start by identifying that specific difficulty, then connect the underlying science to the current unit.

A unit number by itself is not enough. Share the full qualification title, qualification number where available, specification version, current unit title and centre instructions. Also tell us whether the work is ordinary practice, a live assignment or preparation for an external assessment.

BTEC Nationals Applied Science (2016)

Pearson's National suite includes several qualification sizes. The 2016 Extended Certificate combines scientific principles, practical techniques and investigation skills with an optional unit. Its unit numbering and external-assessment arrangements must be read from that specification.

BTEC National Applied Science (AAQ)

Pearson lists a Certificate and an Extended Certificate in this newer family. The Extended Certificate separates biology, chemistry and physics into externally assessed units and also includes practical work. Do not transfer the older National unit numbers or assessment format to this course.

BTEC International Level 3 Applied Science

This is a separate International suite. It uses internally assessed units, including Pearson-set assignments for specified units. Its content, unit combinations and assessment rules depend on the qualification size; it is not the National exam route with a different label.

Build the skills your current unit needs

Choose topics from the learner's actual course. The examples below describe possible lesson focuses, not a promise that every unit or optional specialism is available.

Biological explanations

Use labelled diagrams and cause-and-effect explanations to connect cell structures, tissues and biological processes. Practise explaining how evidence supports a claim, rather than relying on a list of memorised terms.

Chemical calculations and reasoning

Work through particle models, bonding, reacting quantities and concentration problems where these appear in the course. Identify the known quantities, convert units first and explain what the numerical result means.

Physics in context

Read diagrams and select suitable relationships for waves, forces or other specified physics topics. Keep symbols, units and direction clear, and check whether the answer is reasonable for the situation.

Graphs and scientific data

Choose suitable scales, describe patterns accurately and distinguish an observation from an explanation. Practise calculations on sample data and discuss variation, anomalous results and the limits of a conclusion.

Investigation planning and evaluation

Discuss variables, controls, repeat measurements and the purpose of a proposed method using practice scenarios. Compare improvements by explaining which source of error each would address, rather than writing a generic list.

Scientific communication

Build a clear chain from question to evidence to conclusion. Use relevant terminology, labelled working and properly attributed sources, while keeping assessed writing and practical records the learner's own.

A useful starting point: concentration and unit conversion

Original practice example

Original practice example, independent of any live Pearson assessment. A sample contains 0.20 g of dissolved solute in a total solution volume of 50.0 cm³. Find its concentration in g dm⁻³.

Read the worked explanation
  1. Step 1

Choose the relationship: concentration = mass of solute ÷ volume of solution.

  2. Step 2

    Convert the volume: 50.0 cm³ ÷ 1,000 = 0.0500 dm³.

  3. Step 3

    Substitute: 0.20 g ÷ 0.0500 dm³ = 4.0 g dm⁻³.

  4. Step 4

Check the meaning: every 1 dm³ of this solution would contain 4.0 g of solute, assuming the same concentration. This is a mass concentration, not a concentration in mol dm⁻³.

A lesson can use the first attempt to identify whether the difficulty is the concept of concentration, metric conversion or rearranging and substituting into a relationship.

A common mistake

Dividing by 50.0 without converting the volume gives a value in g cm⁻³. It is not a correct value in g dm⁻³ unless it is converted.

Try a variation

If the same 0.20 g of solute is present in a final solution volume of 100.0 cm³, what happens to the concentration?

Check your answer

It halves to 2.0 g dm⁻³: 0.20 ÷ 0.1000 = 2.0.

How a lesson can help you move forward

Locate the difficulty

Bring a permitted practice question, a recent piece of feedback and the current unit information. Identify one priority such as explaining a process, interpreting a graph or completing a calculation.

Build and apply the idea

Use a short explanation, diagram or worked example, then ask the learner to apply the idea to a different practice problem and explain the choices made.

Check independent understanding

Finish with a fresh task completed by the learner. Agree a manageable practice step and a specific point to revisit, such as selecting units or supporting a conclusion with data.

Tell us your full qualification title, specification year, current unit and the topic you find difficult.

Prepare for assessment within your centre’s rules

For units with external assessment, use permitted practice materials to strengthen understanding, interpretation and written working. For assignment-based units, clarify concepts, research skills and the meaning of the task within the centre's rules. Help during a live assessment may be restricted, so the brief and centre instructions take priority.

Online discussion can help a learner understand a method and analyse permitted practice data. Required laboratory work, supervision, observations and authentication remain with the learner's centre. Do not substitute invented results, a home experiment or a tutor's demonstration for required assessed practical evidence.

The learner produces their own assessed answers and records. The centre determines grades, permitted feedback, resubmission arrangements and whether evidence meets the assessment requirements.

BTEC Applied Science tutoring FAQs

Can the same lessons cover National, AAQ and International Applied Science?

Some scientific ideas overlap, but the unit content and assessment requirements differ. Share the full title and current unit so the team can discuss a suitable match and avoid preparing you for the wrong assessment.

Can I focus on chemistry or physics if biology is going well?

Yes, the enquiry can focus on the area causing difficulty. Bring a recent practice question or teacher feedback so a proposed lesson can target a particular concept, calculation or explanation rather than repeating the whole course.

Can online tutoring replace my required laboratory practicals?

No. Practical assessment and authentication remain with your centre. Online support can explain the science behind a method and use permitted practice data, but it does not replace the facilities, supervision or evidence your course requires.

Can a tutor write or improve my assignment for submission?

Assessed work must remain your own. Support can explain underlying ideas and practise relevant skills within your centre's rules. It cannot supply submission-ready answers, fabricate results or rewrite a live assessment on your behalf.

What should I send before requesting a trial?

Send the full qualification title and number if available, specification or course link, current unit title, the topic you find difficult and any rules about outside help. Remove personal details from shared work and identify whether an assessment is currently live.
